Jupiter's Moon Europa (NASA/JPL)

Jupiter's Moon Europa (NASA/JPL)

Introduction

Jupiter's moon Europa is a prime target in our exploration of potentially habitable worlds beyond Earth. Europa, which is approximately the size of Earth's moon, very likely harbors a global, ~100 km deep, liquid water ocean beneath its relatively thin (<25 km) ice shell. This ocean exists today and it has possibly persisted for much of the history of the solar system. Europa may hold the clues to one of NASA's long standing goals - to determine whether or not we are alone in the universe.

Third Community Announcement Regarding Europa Lander Instrument Investigation Program Element Appendix

This third announcement for the Program Element Appendix (PEA) for instrument investigations for a Europa lander mission announces a delay to the release of the PEA.

The original time frame for the solicitation called for the release of the PEA in August 2017 with proposals due approximately three months later. NASA is postponing the release of the PEA to provide time to further evolve the mission concept through continued study. This will also enable NASA to provide higher fidelity information to proposers at the workshop, which is also postponed. A new time frame for the PEA is not available at this time.

Further information will be posted on the Europa Lander Acquisition Page at http://europalander.larc.nasa.gov/ as it becomes available. Questions may be addressed to Dr. Curt Niebur, Europa Program Scientist, Planetary Science Division, Science Mission Directorate, NASA, Washington, DC 20546; Tel.: (202) 358-0390; Email: curt.niebur@nasa.gov.
